Pizza at Fired Pie

Fired Pie. Custom. Pizza. Salad.

This week my husband and I watched a documentary on Chipotle, and it was rather fascinating. And, in case you haven't noticed, there's a whole new category of restaurants that's being developed right under our noses. It's called fast casual dining. And, in my opinion, it was popularized by Chipotle. I love Chipotle!

Here's a list of fast casual restaurants I found on AZ Central for options in Phoenix.

Last night, my husband and I were looking for a fun new place to try for dinner, so we went on Yelp and found Fired Pie. It was a terrific place. It's a lot like Chipotle, or Subway, or however you want to think of it, except for pizza. You can either pick a pizza from a list of "signature pizzas", or you can create your own. You start with a sauce (we tried the Alfredo sauce, and it was absolutely delicious), then choose a cheese (they have several options, including fresh mozzarella), and then pick your toppings. You can get AS MANY TOPPINGS as you want, and the pizza still costs the same price: $7.95. The pizzas are 11 inches, so I would recommend getting 2 if you're going with another person. We got 2 and split between 3 people. I was left wishing there was more, but I wasn't necessarily still hungry. In fact, next door was a Paradise Bakery, so we stopped in and got cookies afterward to finish the meal off.

And apparently they make salad too. (Frankly, I'd rather have the pizza, but maybe someday...)

Here's the menu for Fired Pie.

Here's the reviews on Yelp if you're wanting to see pictures.

Oh, and remember it's fast casual dining. So you watch the workers put your food together behind a window while you tell them what you want, and then they put it into an oven while you're paying. The crust was thin, so we only waited for about 5 minutes (if that) for our pizzas to be ready after we paid. It was so fast! (And casual!) And it was fresh! You should try it out. It's on Ray and the 101. Here's the address: 2855 W Ray Rd, Chandler, AZ 85224. If you're not in Chandler, they do have 4 other locations.

LIBRARIES

We regularly go to the Chandler Downtown Library for some free fun. Libraries are a great place to take kids because there's several things for them to do. Besides reading books, there is often a play area for kids that includes toys or even computers with educational games. We've attended storytime a few times, and there are usually a few options for kids of varying ages, such as lapsit for babies, toddler time, and family storytime. Libraries also offer culture passes, which are free passes that you can check out to go places where you would normally have to pay admission.

Here's a compilation of libraries with culture passes:
Chandler Library Culture Passes
Mesa Library Culture Passes
Phoenix Library Culture Passes
ASU Libraries Culture Passes
Scottsdale Library Culture Passes
Glendale Library Culture Passes

Also, check out your local library's storytimes.
Here's the calendar I use for the Downtown Chandler Library.

MACALPINE'S SODA FOUNTAIN

Picture
A one-of-a-kind restaurant/store is in central Phoenix and is definitely worth whatever drive you have to make to get there. My dad worked in Phoenix and we would go there occasionally for lunch on days when I was able to visit him downtown, but since he's retired we've kept going.

As far as being a soda fountain, there are 100 flavors of soda to choose from. You can have your choice of an ice cream soda, an italian soda, or a plain jane soda. They serve lunch and dinner, too. Off to the side of the restaurant is a vintage store with some great old-fashioned things to look at and buy if you want.

If you're wanting to go, it's on the east side of 7th street between Thomas and McDowell. Here's the address: 2203 N 7th St., Phoenix, AZ 85006There have been some deals on Groupon recently, so you might check it out to see if they're still there.

BOOK EXCHANGE

Picture
A few thoughts on second-hand bookstores:

Sometimes I want to hold onto books that I or my kids might like to read later on, which works sometimes as far as having fun things to read. However, I've been thinking more and more about the fact that new series come out all the time, and kids are interested in different things at different times, which means sometimes they'll want to read the "classics", and sometimes they'll want to read the new stuff. So why not let them choose? We've decided to go about once a year to a second-hand bookstore, trade in old books and let our son pick out "new" ones with the store credit. Granted, you don't often get a lot of money for what you trade in, but it helps pay for some of what you buy. AND you get rid of some of the things you have that no one is looking at, let alone using, at your house.

Bookman's offers a Kids Club where you get 10% off all purchases for kids and a $10 gift certificate in an email during the month of the child's birthday.Kids ages 13-17 can sign up to get 15% off all purchases and a $15 gift certificate sent to their email for their birthday.
Bookman's also offers an educator's discount of 20%. (You need to sign up ahead of time)

Changing Hands in Tempe is a fun, local second-hand bookstore (SW corner of McClintock and Guadalupe). Find Kids Events at Changing Hands.
Changing Hands also offers some nice educator benefits

CITY POOLS

Having worked as a lifeguard for 5 years, I feel like I've seen what a great experience (and what a great deal) it can be to go swimming with your family for just a few dollars. I was going to rank the pools in order of best to worst, but it just really depends on what you want when you go. So here's a list of pools, along with what you need to know about each one. I'm most familiar with the City of Chandler pools, so that's where I'll start.
City of Chandler Pools

Prices:

Under 2 years old: Free
2 - 17 years old: $1.00
18 - 54 years old: $2.25
55 and older: $1.25
You can buy punch passes and family season passes at reduced rates.

Also, if you're a fan of family night and free swim, here's a list of times for those deals:
Monday:
Rhodes Pool Family Night 6-8pm (50% off, kids normally pay $1.25 and adults pay $2.50)
Folley Pool Family Night 8-10pm ($1 per family)

Arrowhead Pool Family Night 8-10pm ($1 per family)
Wednesday:
Desert Oasis Aquatics Center Free Swim 3-5pm
Nozomi Aquatics Center Family Night 6-8pm ($1 per family)

Best features: Dump bucket and kids play structure with zero depth entry, 2 diving boards, 2 big water slides, lazy river, water vortex, deep competition pool, spray pad area

This pool tends to be pretty busy, but it is a fairly large facility so the crowd doesn't seem to close in on you and make you feel like people are constantly swimming  in your space. In my experience, it's best to go to city pools right when they open (as opposed to waiting a couple of hours) or to go later (a couple of hours before closing time). This helps you avoid times when schools or day cares have their daily outings, causing the pools to be more crowded. Saturdays tend to be a bit less busy during the summer as well, and day cares are not necessarily in session on Saturdays.

Best features: 2 diving boards and a high dive, one big water slide, kids play structure with zero-depth entry, and a competition pool

This pool is nice because it doesn't get very busy and has a high dive.

Best features: 1 large water slide, a "drop" slide, an umbrella water feature, 3 kid slides, a zero-depth entry, and a competition pool

This pool also tends to be less busy, since it has less features than some of the other pools, so if you're looking for a more relaxing experience, this pool might work for you. The drop slide is a fun feature, though the slide itself is very short. Still, it empties into a very deep pool, which can be fun for kids who like to see how deep they can swim. The competition pool isn't as deep as the competition pools at Mequite Groves, Nozomi, or Hamilton (it's deepest part is only about 5 feet deep).

Best features: 2 large water slides, a water vortex, a lazy river, kids play structure with zero-depth entry, 2 diving boards, and a competition pool

This pool is busier, like Mesquite Groves Aquatics Center, but it has some fun features, such as the lazy river and water vortex. The lazy river is shorter than the one at Mesquite Groves. The competition pool is fairly deep throughout.

Best features: Large competition pool, 2 diving boards (one is a high dive), water slide, family play pool with zero-depth entry

This pool is pretty basic as far as features. I have only been once since the family play pool and water slide were built, but it seems to be less busy than the other pools. I think it would be a great place to take a toddler, especially since my 2-year old hasn't developed a taste for things that spray him with water.

Best features: a competition pool, 2 diving boards (one is a high dive), kiddie slide, and a spray pad
This pool has the least features of any of the City of Chandler pools. I have never been there for recreational swimming.

As far as other city pools, I haven't been to very many because I live closer to the Chandler pools and have had great experiences with them. But if you need information for pools that are closer to where you live, here are some resources:

City of Mesa Pools and Prices
Rhodes Pool in Mesa has a fun new feature called the Flow Rider.
Check it out! (you'll have to sign a waiver to ride it, though)
City of Gilbert Pools
City of Tempe Pools

Kiwanis Park in Tempe has an indoor swimming pool.
City of Phoenix Pools

And of course, there's always the big, more expensive swimming adventures:

DIAMONDBACKS GAMES

Going to a Diamondbacks game can be a really fun way to spend an afternoon/evening with the whole family. They don't have to cost very much if you don't mind where you sit, and the light rail makes it extremely easy to access the game and not worry about driving/gas or parking.

Groupon is offering a deal right now for up to half off tickets for June 16, 17, or 18.
Go to Groupon to view the deal.

On the Diamondbacks website, there are often deals for packages of tickets. There are often deals that include a meal (hot dog, soda, and a cookie) with a ticket.
Look at tickets on the Diamondbacks website.

Like I said, the light rail is a great option for getting to the game, and I highly recommend it. My husband and I have used it a couple of times and have had great experiences with it. It's clean, convenient, and travels pretty fast (you avoid waiting at lights, but you do make stops about once per mile). Typically, you drive your car to a park and ride and get on there (my husband like the park and ride that is on Main, East of Dobson, but a lot of people use the one that is on Main, just east of the 101). If you're going to a baseball game, the light rail lets you off about a block away from Chase Field. It's $2 per ride or $4 for an all-day pass.
Look at the light rail schedule.

THE TASTE TEST

Some of the ideas I post here may seem a bit off-the-wall, but they're the sort of thing we like to do for fun, and they end up being pretty inexpensive. This idea started because it was about 10:00 at night and I was a bit bummed out that we hadn't done anything fun, in addition to the fact that we hadn't had any dinner either (some days are like that, you know?). Here's how the conversation went:

Me: What could we eat? What's even open at 10:00?
My husband: Well...McDonald's. Filiberto's. Los Favoritos.
Me: I don't want to go to McDonald's.
My husband: Didn't we decide that Fililberto's has a better carne asada burrito than Los Favoritos?
Me: I don't remember deciding that.
My husband: Well, then, let's decide!

And so we went. My husband made a spreadsheet (I know, we're nerds, but that's probably one reason we like each other) with different categories (tortilla taste, meat flavor, quality of ingredients, price, size, you get the idea). And we went to Filiberto's AND Los Favs and we split a carne asada burrito at both places. Each burrito got a score for each category. And Filiberto's came out on top. No questions.

It's simple and a little silly, but that's probably what will make it a memorable night. I know I'll never wonder again which is the better choice when it comes to carne asada.

So find something you want to compare between two places, and compare it!

THE INDOOR PICNIC/ DRIVE-IN MOVIE

Need:
  • A fun take-out dinner that you don't have to (entirely) make yourself. What we got: Papa Murphy's take-n-bake pizza (we like the kind with the creamy garlic sauce instead of the marinara sauce). We also made a salad at home, but we bought a fun sparkling cider to go with the meal.
  • A good place to watch a movie. My husband's great with setting things up on the quick, so he used his parent's projector and set it up in our room so we could have it on the big screen.
  • A movie. We used Netflix, but RedBox or plain, old-fashioned picking one from the DVD (or VHS, if you want to go there) collection works great too.
  • A blanket. What's a picnic without a blanket? We set it up on our bed so we could watch the movie in our room and not have to eat on the floor, because, let's face it. I'm getting old, and I don't think it'd be that fun to sit on the floor and watch a movie for 2 hours if there's a better option.

On paper, it seems like a bit of a silly date idea, but I'd have to say that it was a fun one, mostly because it was guaranteed time together for a couple of hours without having to spend money on a movie ticket.

Something AWESOME that my husband did while we were dating:
Of course, I realize that he had a lot of great components that a lot of people might not have access to, but I suppose all it takes is a bit of creativity. He used his parent's projector to set up a movie in the backyard. Their backyard had a gate that opened up into an alley, so he pulled a car in through the gate. Then he set up the sound so that the sound for the movie came in through the sound system of the car (this is where I would be completely lost if someone asked me to help in any way in setting up, and I'm only a little ashamed to admit it). And voila! We had an at-home drive-in movie. Complete with popcorn.
