100 DAYS OF A NOT-SO-HOT SUMMER


Don’t get me wrong; it’s still going to be hot. It’s Arizona. This list has a lot of activities that involve kids, but a lot of them could be done with one person, two people, or a whole group. Some of the ideas involve money (some less money than others), and some are free things to do at or around home. Remember: doing something special simply for the sake of “doing something special” automatically makes the day a fun and special day. Hence, a lot of these ideas are simple, but they are special things to kids.

1. Go to a city  or community pool
2. Go to a library and check out books
3. Make ice cube popsicles
4. Play in the sprinklers
5. Have an early-morning breakfast picnic
6. Sidewalk “painting” with water
7. Visit a play area at a mall
8. Attend story time at a library or bookstore
9. Go on a morning or evening bike ride
10. Have a Kool-Aid stand with several kinds of Kool-Aid
11.  Go to a spray pad
12. Go on a night-hike with flashlights
13. Get a deal on a meal at IKEA
14. Visit a farmer’s market
15. Buy Icee/popcorn combos at Target and go to the Dollar Spot
16. Set up a tent or build a fort inside
17. Get shaved ice
18. Build a sprinkler pipes system
19. Go to a park in the morning and take sand toys, bikes, or chalk
20. Trip to McDonald’s for ice cream
21. Take an early-morning hike
22. Go to the Phoenix Zoo
23. Make no-bake cookies
24. Play board games
25. Listen to an audiobook (can check out at a library)
26. Rent a RedBox DVD
27. Get cookies and lemonade at Chick-Fil-A and spend time in the play place
28. Go to Tempe Town Lake
29. Cover a wall with paper and create a mural
30. Have a tie-dye party
31. Go to the AZ science center
32. Go to a pet store and have fun browsing
33. Ride the carousel at Superstition Springs Center
34. Go to a Diamondbacks game
35. Go to a Rookie League baseball game (free admission)
36. Go to a summer movie program movie or go to a discount theater (Tuesday nights are $2 per ticket)
37. Test the whole fried-egg on a sidewalk theory
38. Buy donut holes at Bosa Donuts (99 cents for 1 dozen)
39. Make homemade musical instruments
40. Ride the rides at Freestone Park
41. Do a puzzle as a family
42. Print family photos at a kiosk and buy a cheap photo album or make a scrapbook (toddlers love this)
43. Ride the Light Rail
44. Have a family “party” with whoever’s at home (don’t forget invitations!)
45. Have an evening picnic at Kiwanis Park
46. Make homemade ice cream in a bag
47. Take an evening walk through a downtown area in Mesa, Gilbert, or Chandler
48. Play at a new park on the Scottsdale Greenbelt
49. Buy a fish and some fish food at Petsmart or Walmart
50. Have a water balloon fight

51. Have a squirt-gun war
52. Get half-price shakes at Sonic (after 8pm)
53. Get happy-hour drinks at Sonic (2-4pm)
54. Get drinks at QT and save the cups to get cheaper re-fills

55. Have a movie marathon 
56. Plant a window-sill garden
57. Make a homemade treat for some friends and take it to them
58. Make a time-capsule and save it for next summer
59. Go to the Mesa Mormon Temple or Gilbert Mormon Temple and try to identify specific flowers while walking around
60. Pop popcorn and have a “sleepover” while watching a movie as a family
61. Go get a car wash (everyone feels better when the car’s clean)
62. Give the car a car wash at home (in an effort to get yourself wet in the process)
63. Buy a frozen treat at Circle K or Walmart (in one of the deep freezers)
64. Make a trip to Trader Joe’s just to use their mini-shopping carts for kids
65. Play Frisbee golf
66. Play Don’t Eat Pete
67. Make ants on a log
68. Make homemade caramel apples
69. Make a family tree
70. Go out to breakfast
71. Take a free tour of the Stuffington Bear Factory
72. Get a Papa Murphy’s pizza (don’t forget a dessert pizza or cookie dough!)
73. Make up the rules for and hold a Wii tournament on a specific game
74. Make a kite and fly it
75. Have a fancy tea party and learn about proper etiquette
76. Wash plastic toys using soap and water (a great game for toddlers)
77. Print and use coloring sheets of favorite animated characters
78. Make paper plate masks
79. Learn some basic origami
80. Experiment with paper-mache
81. Make paper bag puppets and have a puppet show
82. Make mini pizzas (or mini hamburgers, or mini hot dogs, or mini anything!)
83. Create a special playlist or CD of music and listen to it throughout the day
84. Cut out pictures from magazines and make a collage
85. Make and decorate sugar cookies or cupcakes
86. Play “Simon Says” or “Mother May I”
87. Play “I Spy”
88. Buy and use a watercoloring book
89. Attend a Home Depot kids workshop
90. Paint pet rocks
91. Go to Walgreens and pick out a favorite candy bar
92. Go to Burger King and use the magic soda machine
93. Go to FlipSide or Peter Piper Pizza and play in the arcade
94. Learn the rules to a card game and play it
95. Read a book that has a movie made for it. Watch the movie after reading it.
96. Plan a dream family vacation that you could take someday
97. Watch a musical
98. Go to the grocery store just to get something from the quarter machines
99. Attend a Michaels Kids Club class
100. Go to the Arizona Museum of Natural History
